What is Cinematography?

Cinematography is a function of camera movements between the camera lens and also the source of light provided. Also its the way the camera is positioned in the scene and the capacity of the motion depending of how it is set up. the camera can show us the action and the landscapes presented from the characters points of view: this can quickly reveal the reactions and the emotions of characters so it can ensure that we can see the narrative clues necessary so that the story can come together.

Cinematography is used to create a meaning in the film, for example establishing shots to set the scene and the location, long shots to introduce the characters, mid shots to illustrate action and also medium close up for emotional responses

close up or extreme close up for intense emotion

Examples:

Physco 1960 a film directed by Alfred Hitcock based on a young women who steals money from her employer and then flees the town so she does not get caught. on a rainy night Janet Leigh playing the character Marian Crane stops at a hotel in a isolated town that is run by a Physco Norman bates playing Anthony Perkins. In addition, leading up to the famous shower scene this is where cinematography becomes more famous as he was the first to use extreme angels to convey the emotion and tension. In the shower scene he uses high extreme angels to show the tension and vulnerability of Marian Crane as she starts to slowly die within her stabbing. Also, he used medium close up shots of the character Janet in the shower as it showed fear.

Another example, would be the the crime thriller movie 'The Call' with actress Hallie berry plays the character of a 911 caller answering emergency calls and she then is in a sticky situation with a 911 call which includes her saving a girls life from a burglar. The opening scene starts with a birds eye view of the city Los Angeles with multiple 911 calls surrounding the background, this creates tension and depth so that it gives the  audience information of where it is set and also it creates anxiety performed within the scene.
