Mise en Scene: Body language and facial expression

Costumes, body language and facial expressions play a big part in miss en scene within any type of thriller film or play especially in thriller films. These convention are important because they help to tell a story to the audience within the film so they have a better understanding of who the characters are from the film such as the genre, costume, body language and even their facial expressions. Costumes are really important within every film as they identify of what kind of character the actor/actress playing and to put a scene of the year such as Old fashioned clothes could be the year 1800-1900, Retro wear 1940-1960 and such as Modern day wear for 20th century films. Also, for adventure/fantasy costumes are a major key as they define themselves as a villain, criminal, hero or even a fairy this would be more for the children and also the Marvel films.

Costumes and the characters within the thriller genre are usually stereotyped more than any other film genre. Moreover, within thriller films there are some film techniques such as a protagonists and antagonists such as the genre of the film or the place that it is set on. A stereotypical victim of a protagonist would be a women with a child on the streets alone and a man alone in a very busy city at night as it would be more dangerous.

A good example of a protagonist and a antagonist film would be the Black Swan 2010 which was played by actress Natalie Portman. this film is a great example due to the fact that she is in many different situations as from previous difficulties due to her family which made he a very corrupted but innocent ballerina in different situations. we see the character Nina played by (Natalie Portman) as an innocent young lady that lives with her mum that peruses her to win every competition to be the best ballet dancer in the city. She then auditions for the part of the White and Black swan for a ballet production, as many people come to audition one catches her eye as she prevents her from rehearsing and drugs her to fantasize about her sexuality with Lily (Mila Kunis). Nina finds herself competing for the part for the black swan that causes her become involved and lose herself with reality and enters a very dark spot and makes her enter a living nightmare she fantasized when she was younger. She does not deal with the rejection very well of not getting the role in the ballet play very easily,  This is a great example of a protagonist and antagonist thriller examples.

Moreover, before Nina started to lose her involvement in reality she was a massive role of her mothers life as she saw her as a sweet, innocent girl that fulfilled her dreams of becoming ballet dancer, but later on in the film, she loses her reality as from a part of the black swan that targets her to visualize demonic figures to control her thoughts and body to a nightmare world where she doesn't want to be involved in.

Nina's costume from the swan la performance was majestically all white with duck feathers to represent the figure of a swan as this is shown near the end of the film when she performs to the audience. we see her in very pastel, light pink/white colors throughout the film. this costume gives her the impression of the innocent character her mum wishes to see her as it would say there was nothing bad in her life before.

On the other hand, the black swan costumes we see to the end of the film represents more of the dark side Nina was experiencing throughout her life at that point, less innocent. Her costume for the swan lake production as the black swan was the dark version of the white swan, which shows how much she had lost herself as when performing the black swan she actually felt like she was the black swan from her body language and her facial expressions as she felt like she was that very powerful dark character, not being able to get back to her reality from how much she is involved. In addition, this costume would no longer would show her purity as such from the evil inside her when she turn in the the swan.

Body language:

Another part of mise en scene is the importance of body language in thriller or any type of genre films. Body language is used to identify a certain character within the movie as it will allow the audience to get an idea of what the characters are portraying a protagonist or an antagonist role. in this scene screenshot from the film Physco 1960 who can see that both of their body languages are completely different such as the ma he is becoming very aggressive towards the women that is trying to flee him as it shows that he is trying to kill her with a knife. This type of body language is extremely conventional to most thriller films.

Facial expressions:

Facial expressions are very popular is every single film known to man, they are used to identify expressions, moods or even emotions from the characters they actors/actresses are playing.
